This is for your child aged 10-14yrs , your Tween.
When we can do something well we usually feel confident for example, when we’ve practised or revised and know we’ve prepared as best we can. We feel confident when we’re with people we like and who like us. Generally when we feel confident we feel calm and able to cope with whatever is required. That’s a good feeling isn’t it? Write down when you feel this good feeling of confidence.
You may find that your confident feelings relate to your VAK. For example a visual person might feel especially confident when they know they look good. An auditory person may feel confident when they’ve played a piece well on the piano or sung well, spoken well. A kinaesthetic person will feel confident when they play a good match or do something really well.
Does this remind you of other confident times? Write down some more examples of when you feel confident.
Do you notice a pattern? Do you tend to feel confident in certain types of situation?
What we’re going to do now is anchor them. An anchor is an association or link. When you go past a McDonalds and smell the burgers you probably think you’re hungry and want to buy one. The smell is a trigger. This is a subconscious anchor because you did not intend to make the association. We are going to set up a conscious association so that we can use the trigger whenever we want to feel confident and have high self-esteem. You can use it on your first day at a new school or on a first date, when you have to give a talk to the class or do anything you’re a bit nervous about.
Here’s how we do anchoring.
Your anchor could be an image or a picture (if you are visual), a sound or piece of music (if you are auditory) or an action (if you are kinaesthetic).
Choose an anchor that you can use anywhere because it can be a bit embarrassing otherwise! Lots of people use this one by putting your thumb and first finger together.
People in business and sport use anchors when they want to access confidence, calm, energy or focus. You can have different anchors for different strengths.
